MINISTRIES

One of the most important values of Whitehouse Free Methodist Church is our mission to glorify Jesus Christ by spreading the gospel and serving our communities. There are numerous opportunities to serve.
1 John 3:17-18 (NIV)

17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Matthew 25:35 (NIV)

35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in

Backpack Program

The Whitehouse backpack program was started in 2014 when members of the congregation began talking about their experience working in local elementary schools. Many of the children would come to school hungry during the week, and there was a real concern for them not being fed over the weekends. Surrounding school districts had implemented a backpack program that sent home kid-friendly food items to make sure the kids were eating over the weekend. Pastor Kenny Rockwell contacted the local school district and found a significant need in the community.

The program supports numerous schools and at times has grown to supplying food to over 90 children. The feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive. The children look forward to the weekends because they love their goody bags. They are happy. We also discovered that some of the children were sharing their food with younger siblings, which touched our hearts greatly, so we expanded the program to preschoolers.

In addition to the food ministry, we extend invitations to attend children’s ministry programs such as skating parties, Vacation Bible School (VBS), and Easter egg hunts. We have had children attend and love the opportunity to minister to the families. A committed band of workers shop, pack, and deliver food every week. It is a great time of fellowship when we come together each Wednesday to pack the bags. Prayers are said while packing the backpacks and while shopping for the supplies. Our faithful delivery squad makes sure the backpacks make it to the schools.

Food Bank

The Whitehouse food bank was started to provide families in our community with a monthly box of food, containing various fresh, boxed, and canned items, including fruits, vegetables, pasta, meat, eggs, milk, bread, and deserts. In addition to food, the boxes are occasionally packed with cards and other items hand made by our children as service projects. On special occasions flowers, chocolates, and other items are included.

The Whitehouse FMC has a food pantry and freezers for storage. The Whitehouse food bank team meets one Saturday every month to shop for fresh items and pack boxes to hand deliver to recipients. Hand delivering the food boxes provides more than just food, as the team is able to visit and spend time with the recipients, which is a humbling and blessed experience for all.

The program has expanded since inception and at times provides monthly food needs to over 20 local families. The food bank also works with the backpack program occasionally to provide the backpack kids and their families meals during the summer months, holidays, and other special occasions.
